The Grace Parish Directory

The mission of Grace Episcopal Church, Woodlawn, a diverse, inclusive, and welcoming parish, is to attend to the spiritual needs of our parishioners by maintaining a strong, eucharistically-centered worship wherein the Gospel is preached powerfully and with theological integrity, and to minister to the multitude of persons in need around us through outreach ministries.

Grace parishioners are indeed committed to inclusiveness. We are a diverse parish with members from throughout metropolitan Birmingham. Our parish family consists of traditional families, same-gender couples, as well as many unmarried, divorced, and widowed single members. A small number of active members are of African-American and Hispanic/Latino heritage. We strive for greater racial and ethnic diversity. Grace Church was instrumental in establishing the first Latino/Spanish-speaking ministry in the Diocese of Alabama, Inglesia Episcopal de la Gracia. As de la Gracia has relocated to a more spacious parish home, many of us mourn loosing them from our parish family.

Our diversity continues in our personal ministries and how we each express our love for Jesus Christ in our community and beyond. Possessing a multitude of political and social views, we have members who are active in statewide tax and constitutional reform issues through Diocesan task force and other ecumenical organizations. Other parishioners work for social justice organizations committed to working for full equality of gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender citizens as well as Latino/Hispanic immigrants within our Church and our community through ministry with ecumenical projects and through Integrity Alabama and HICA - The Hispanic Interest Coalition of Alabama.

As central as outreach and ministry is to the life of Grace Church, we realize we must take care of our parish home in order for us to exist and thrive in Woodlawn and in the world. The staff employed to support Grace includes our interim rector, sexton, and parish musician. Many are committed to serving the parish community as volunteers. By volunteering as Parish Office assistants, choir members, as well as serving all the other guilds and committees essential to a complete parish life, our members support the parish in its mission.
